School ProfileUniversity of the Immaculate Conception (UIC) is a Roman Catholic institution of higher learning in Davao City, Philippines. It is administered by the Religious of the Virgin Mary. Was established on 1905, UIC committed to all their human resources to transform the members of the UIC family to become enlightened, empowered, pro-active and liberated Christian leaders living in a humane and harmonious community for love of God and love of country. Ruined by the sisters. And the president now is Sister Maria Marissa R. Viri, RVM, PhD. UIC has since grown to encompass three campuses: the Fr. Selga (Main) campus, Bonifacio (Annex) campus and Bajada (basic education) campus. The Fr. Selga campus along Pichon Street houses the departments of information technology, nursing, medical technology, music, nutrition & dietetics, pharmacy, and the Graduate School. Called the Main campus, it was built in the 1960s to house the college's growing population. The school's original location in Downtown Davao along Bonifacio street is now called the Annex campus. This houses the colleges of Business and Governance, Engineering, Education, and Liberal Arts. Finally, the Bajada campus houses the grade school and high school facilities of the university. A library can be found on the Fr. Selga campus. The said campus also includes housing and sports facilities. Academic Support SystemThe support system of the academics in University of the Immaculate Conception is good. They have some facilities in the three campuses. They have :
Teaching SystemThe UIC High School Department, recognized as a Secondary School of Excellence, continues to meet the challenge to maintain and strengthen its academic and non-academic performance and sustain its achievements over the years. To ensure this, LEADS and SHAPES, an innovative and transformative system of instructional delivery has been introduced, cascading the school’s vision and mission and integrating Ignacian core and related values in all instructional classes and integration activities. LEADS is Learn, Excel, Achieve, Develop Character and Serve. SHAPES refers to key value points: Start where you are, Harness what you have, Acquire new knowledge and skills, Preserve your Filipino values and resources, Enrich your culture, Share your learning to others. Students and faculty are reminded constantly of these imperatives through a LEADS prayer before the start of a class or activity and the SHAPES Prayer at the end of a class or activity. These prayers also help them imbibe more meaningfully the Vision, Mission, and Goal of the University. Under this program, UIC High School aims to be the premier pre-college education provider in Region XI under the K to 12 program, forming graduates to be Leaders with Character. Towards this, the High School Department is focused on faculty development with emphasis on the teacher as curriculum leader, as keenly as it is on its student activity and development program. CurriculumUIC High School teachers have also prepared for the intensified application of the UbD Framework and the initial implementation of the K to 12 program by undergoing the training, “Curricular Visioning and Benchmarking” that puts emphasis on the teacher as a curriculum leader. The training’s lecture-workshop construct enhances teaching effectives. The training initiative is an innovative approach to re-tool the faculty to effect curricular change and to expand learning opportunities. The teachers productively engage in the workshop activities, leading to a review of the Development Program on Instruction. K-12 is a program that covers kindergarten and 12 years of basic education to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship. Its general features include:
Teaching MethodsThe teaching methods that been used for the students is they gave the preliminaries. It is the introduction before you started the lesson. Teachers will be have their own goal for one lesson. They can used Pictures or Videos as a media. And then they usually to give the APK for the students, so we would know how far the students are understanding the lesson. Teachers are also give the students assessment and purposive assignment as a media after they explain the concept of the lesson to the students. Learning materials & innovation, and Sources of learning technologyAs a science teacher, I used 3 books for the references of one lesson. And used the media to create the good atmosphere when I'm teaching. Science teacher also has a practicum in laboratories based on the lesson that they will be given. The good things is UIC was provided the needs of the teachers, through the books, media, laboratories, etc. They used book or laptop as a media for teaching. And the school was provided LCD and LCD television in all classroom. Observation on TeacherOn my observation week. I followed my Cooperating Teacher when he went to the classroom. I observed how is he doing with his teaching method. He already planned for teaching through the learning plan that he already made for it. And it was being checked by the Subject Specialist of the Major. He do prepared the materials for teaching, through the media, he used power point presentation for his teaching method. For teaching in class, he used the 3 steps of teaching. First is explaining the concept, second is explaining the example problem, the last is giving the study case that related to the lesson. Teaching PracticeAfter I already did the observation week. This is the time for me to have my teaching practice. The procedures of teaching are followed by this one:
I found some problem in my teaching practice. One of them is our language. Because Indonesian and Philippines have the different pronunciation when we speak English. So I have to adapt my self with their pronunciation. And sometimes some students were talked to me with Tagalog or Bisaya (one of the dialect in Philippines). And for the solving the problems, I just asked their friend what is he/she saying. Except the time management, classroom management here is also important. Me as a teacher have to make the classroom atmosphere conducive. My cooperating teacher said that my classroom management can still be improved. One thing that I have to do is develop my voice, so I can make the classroom atmosphere conducive than before I managed the classroom. Summary and SuggestionsFor all I have done in my teaching experiences. I could take some conclusion.
The purposes of practicum is to get a new experiences being a teacher. I already got many experiences from this project. The outcomes of practicum are I got a new insight of how's being a teacher, the difference of the curriculum and learning materials that been used from Indonesia and Philippines, and also the school system and managment. The challenge of practicum is the language. English is really important in the world, so we have to improved our english skill. And through this project I could improved my skill. Not my hard skills but also the soft skills. Suggestion for future improvement. I would like to giving some suggestion for UIC, I hope that in the next batch, the schedule for the pre-service student teacher will be given in the first day of our stay. The day by day schedules for the PSST, I think is good. Overall impression. I am so thankful to joined this program. Because I could see the teachers world. And I already knew that being a teacher is hard but it is nice occupation ever. And I also knew that the experiences was the best teacher. This program was the best program for me as a college students. I would like to say thank you to my home university, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) Surabaya for gave me the opportunity and of course my host university, University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC) Philippines for welcoming us and gave us the nice hospitality ever. And the last is for Southeast Asia Ministry of Education Organization (SEAMEO) for making the best exchange program ever. Through this report I would like to said that you can read my experiences living in Davao City through this link below :
Thank you :)

On February 13th we were to going to Indonesia Consulate with Sr. Delvina. This is the lovely things ever, because when we went there, we felt like at home. We met so many Indonesian there and we went to SID (Sekolah Internasional Davao). After that, we straightly went to SM Ecoland Mall and ate together at Nodis. This is the preview photos os us as Indonesian. The 4th week was the hardest part. I already comfortable there and I have to go back to my home. The hardest part is when you say goodbye to your students and the students just asked "Miss, why you go back?" or they just said "Miss, please stay". I was holding my tears back when they said that. On February, 14th, I gave the last words to my Cooperating Teacher, Sir Loja. He is so nice and welcoming me until the end of my program. I'm quite sad but I have to continued my life. After I'm saying goodbye to him, Mica, Rica, and Ate Lorna fetched us at Bajada and we went to Annex Campus to joined the Education Program Team Building. I do played a game with another education students, not only the 4th year students, but there is also another year students. And we met the 3J again hahaha. The team building is good. After we finished our schedule there, we straightly went to the city tourism in Davao with Ate Lorna and Mylene. We just walked from the Annex Campus to the places. We went to City Hall, Rizal Park, and People's Park. This is the preview photos of us on Valentine Day. After that we straightly went home, and prepared for our performance for the next day. The next day was the Closing Program of us. So in the evening, we practice one of Indonesia's traditional dance, and it's called by Tari Saman (Ratoeh Jaroe). We have our closing program on Annex Campus. So we went there again on February 15th. The closing program was lit. There is some performances from us and from the UIC representatives. I got a chance to spoke in front of the audiences to share my experiences live in Davao City, especially in UIC. I don't realize that I cried when I shared my experiences. I get touched when I'm seeing my speech. I felt sad and happy at the same time. Because one month is not enough to get along with them. After we finished our closing program, we straightly went to some room and we ate some foods together. The best is the foods there were all halal's foods. The cake that is called by "bibignit" was my favorite. It's so deliciooooooooous~ Before we went home, we take a tour with our friends, because there is some party, and we did our face painting. This is the preview photos of us on February 15th. On Friday and Saturday, we were preparing our luggage and also we went to Lola Abon's to bought another Pasalubong. And on Saturday, we have our last time together with Mylene and Ate Lorna first. We went to Gaisano Mall to printing some photos (the photos is a gift for our friends in Davao City). That is the girls day out, I think. After we finished it, Ma'am Pregua were invited us to have our dinner at Burger King. But sadly that Mylene have to went home earlier, and here we comes Jason. Actually Ma'am Pregua treated us burger king. After that we didn't went home, but we went to Keepsakes restaurant to bought Buffalo Wings Chicken. Jason was treated us lol. Anyway, the buffalo wings is really good and tastes very delicious. But it's not really spicy (Indonesian are really good at eating spicy foods #facts). This is the preview photo of us on Friday and Saturday. Sunday, February 18th 2018 It's supposed to be our happy day. But somehow I felt blue. I was ready to go home, but I'm not ready yet to leave Davao City at that day. Our last goodbye is in the airport. And that is the first time I saw Hendri cried. When Ma'am Pregua and Ma'am Solomon hugged us for the last time, I was really tried hard to hold my tears back. The saddest part is when the guard of the airport were not let us to stay in the wrong places and the 3J were not coming yet. So we have to checked in first, and after that we could go out again for a moment. So they arrived at the right time before our boarding time. So we gave our simple gift for them, and we hope that they would never forgot our faces and our journey together. The 3J was the "first man" fetched us at the airport, so they have to be the last man who dropped us at the last time before we go back to our home. Thank you for the sweetest memories together, and I hope our friendship will never be forgotten. Maybe we are separated by the distance now, but not in our heart. We will comeback to Davao City or you guys will visit Indonesia someday. Thank you and I love you, UIC, UIC-ian, and Philippines. Week 3. Starts on February 5th until February 11th 2018. This is our week! WHOAH we having our teaching week finally. After being postponed in the second week hahaha. I am so happy and also sooooo nervous at that time. The first day of my teaching day was so lit. My Cooperating Teacher, Sir Loja was giving me some advice and correction for my teaching method. It help me so much for the next day of my teaching week. I started to teaching on St. Claire section on 9 a.m. They were very nice to me, and very welcome. Physics is hard so I have to found some method for explained the concept of the lesson. In my teaching week experiences, I found that being a teacher is really hard. You have to make your students understand of the concept of your lesson, and also you have to manage the class very well. It is the best opportunity for my self to learn more and more. Because the best teacher is experiences. I found really hard to teaching and managed one section of the 9th grade section. The section was very noisy and hard to understood my self. So, me as a teacher have to be creative to make the students enjoy their class. I also found that explained some concepts was hard, because physics is all about concepts. Before the students do the problems, the students have to understood about the concepts of the lesson. I tried to explained the concepts with pictures, videos, example problems, task, assignment, and motivation as my method. I hope that my method was right and the students is understanding the concept of projectile motion very well. This is the preview photos of my self in "teaching-week". On Thursday, February 8th 2018. I don't have any schedules after 3 p.m. So my friend invited me to the kindergarten. Because they have pajama party there. I was so happy because this is the best therapy to heal your stress. Seeing cute children was one of the best part as a teacher at UIC. The first day of the pajama party is for the morning session of kindergarten. They was playing game, eating together, sleeping together, etc. The pajama party starts on 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. But we only attended the pajama party until 5 p.m. I attended the pajama party for 2 days row on Thursday and Friday. On Friday is the pajama party for the afternoon session of UIC's Kindergarten. This is the preview photos of pajama party of the kindergarten. Saturday, February 10th 2018 SAMAL ISLAND TOUR HOPPING The best part of this program beside the teaching experiences, is the holidays. So for the first day of our holidays, they invited us to join the Samal Island Tour Hopping. I was very happy because I loved beaches so much. I loved to seeing water, sea, ocean, sands, etc. So we went to the tour with Ma'am Pregua, Ma'am Ferie (one of the education teachers - she is the physical education major teacher), Jason, Jude, and Jasmin. Well, finally we met the 3J again lol. We went to St. Ana Port at the early morning, and after that we ride the boat about 1 hour. The view was really satisfied my eyes. I loved to see the color of the water. It's blue and really you can clearly saw the fishes there. There are 5 destinations of the Samal Island Tour are Coral Garden, Babu Santa Beach Resort, Sabang Cliff, Giant Clam Sanctuary, and Diaz Island. We also can see Pearl Farm Beach Resort (the most expensive resort of Davao City). Actually the 4 of us are not really good at swimming, but finally we do snorkeling. Thanks to Ma'am Ferie who helped us at that time. The Samal Island Tour Hopping starts at the early morning until the late afternoon. We were so happy to go to there with them. Thanks Ma'am Pregua for invited us to the most beautiful destinations ever :) This is the preview photos of us at the Samal Island. Sunday, February 11th 2018 EDEN NATURE PARK & CROCODILE PARK At the second day of our holidays, we went to two destination. First we went to Eden Nature Park. We went there with another friends of us, they are Mica, Rica, and Ate Lorna. And also Ma'am Solomon could joined us at this time. The view is so refreshing. We loved it since the nature park there is really green. So at the early morning we went to Eden Nature Park first, and we having our tour inside the park by bus. We have 1 hour to saw the whole Eden Nature Park. And we took a lot of pictures there. We also have our lunch there, because we bought the ticket with lunch, so we do anything as we want there. We also played Indiana Jones and another games there. This is the preview photos of us at Eden Nature Park. After lunch, we straightly went to Crocodile Park and we could see so many animals there. And we also took a pictures and show the animal show there. And we could see the biggest crocodile that I've ever seen there. It is so nice to go to the zoo with Filipinos. And the one that I loved is I could see ostrich and fed 'em. This is the preview photos of us at Crocodile Park. Week 2 in Davao City, Philippines. Starts on Monday, January 29th 2018 until Sunday, February 4th 2018. The schedule for us it has to be our teaching week. But I'm kinda shock because UIC is really have sooooooo many events on January. So our teaching schedule it has to be postponed until the next week. My second week live in Davao City (honestly) was the hardest part of my life there. I felt homesick, I really want to go home since the first day of the second week. I really missed my family, my friends, my life in Indonesia. And I am not comfortable enough there, somehow. But life must go on, so I decided to not think about "home" anymore. In the second week, we were still go to Bajada every weekdays. I joined the school's program. I also could observed something. On Monday and Tuesday at the second week, the 9th grade students has an event called "Performance Task". The task is conducted 40% of their total score. So all Philippines do that things, because the task is from the government. They do the task with performing something and it is Drama. So on Monday, I could see their rehearsal for the Performance Task. They did the practice at the auditorium of Senior High School Building. And on the next day (re; Tuesday), they do the Performance Task in front of the teachers of the 9th grade, and also their classmates. This is the preview photos of me, my friend, and my students on Monday and Tuesday. On Thursday. The junior high school students were having their ceremony to closed the Teacher's Day Program. I really loved to seeing the ceremony. The ceremony is based on Catholic. Because the teacher's day of this moment is Catholic's Teacher Day. They held the ceremony at the Gymnasium at the morning. And the whole students and the teachers were do the Parade at the whole schools. This is the preview photo of the events. Because we don't really have any schedules at the second week. Ma'am Pregua and Ma'am Solomon were invited us to go to the mall with them. On Wednesday, Ma'am Pregua fetched us at the Bajada, and after that we straightly went to Victoria Plaza to have our coffee time with her. Instead of drinking coffee, we have our quality time at Mister Donuts. We shared our experiences of our observation week with her. It is nice things because we were homesick, and Ma'am Pregua came in the right time. And the simple things was make us happy. On the next day (re; Thursday). Ma'am Solomon invited us to have our quality time with her. We went to Victoria Plaza (again) with Shovie (one of the education program student). And she invited us to bought something at the grocery. Actually she treated us hahaha, and we are more happier than before. Because our life there, UIC already prepared refectory (kitchen and dining room) especially for us. And I know the all things there was new. So we do the grocery and bought so many foods. And also after that, finally we tried the famous fast food in Philippines, and it is Jollibee~ Because we really want to tried it since the first week of our staying. So we were happy for the simple things that they gave to us. It's all blessings for us :) Saturday, 3rd of February 2018 Happy birthday, Normi~ My friends from Indonesia are having her birthday on that day. So we did a little surprise for her in the morning. Me, Aliana, Syifa, and Mylene (our friend from UIC) were prepared some surprise for her. And also Ma'am Pregua and Ma'am Solomon have a plan to make a surprise for her. So they texted me, that we have to be ready at the late afternoon and do our surprise for her. So on 3 pm we were ready, and they came to our dormitory at Main Campus, Bankerohan. And they gave the cake for her. Finally, we met one teacher that we already met on our interview, called by Sir Rene (lol hello, Sir). After we finished our "real" surprise for her, they invited us to have our dinner at the outside of our dormitory. So we went to Ahfat Chinese Seafood Restaurant near Victoria Plaza. We went there by Tricycle. Because I really loved seafood, I felt blessed and sooooooo happy to eat there. The shrimp is really the delicious one. Honestly I can eat the whole plate of shrimp, but I kinda shy, so I just eat it a lil bit too much hahaha. We went there also with ate Lorna (our guide), and we met new teachers from Education Program there. This is the preview photos of us of Normi's Day. Sunday, 4th of February 2018 We were not tired when we go to somewhere with our relation. We already have our party on Saturday. But Sr. Erlin and Sr. Ancilla (sisters from Indonesia) were invited us to have another party for Normi again. Only simple party, we did our quality time as Indonesian. In the early afternoon, sr. Erlin was fetched us at our dormitory, and we straightly went to Abreeza Mall. We did our "jalan-jalan" there while waiting for sr. Ancilla. And for lunch, they treated us at the chicken restaurant. They said this is the gift for us of our presence at UIC. Thank you very much, sisters for the quality time with us. January, 21st 2018 - Arrived at Davao City The first day live in Davao. I took a flight of Cebu Pacific Airways from Jakarta to Davao. But first I have to transit first in Manila (the capital city of Philippines). The flight from Jakarta to Manila is 4 hours. It is quite tired. When I am in the aircraft, honestly I really can't sleep. I took the night flight, so everyone is sleeping, but I am not really sleep there. The total time of the flight is 6 hours. After took a long time flight, finally I arrived at Davao City. The airport name is Fransisco Bangoy International Airport. The small city, but it is the safest city in Philippines. I took the same flight with my friends from Lambung Mangkurat University, Banjarmasin. They are Normi and Syifa. When we arrived there, we already being fetched by the teachers, sister, students, and of course the driver. They are very welcoming us (really). The teachers are Ma'am Jo-Ann Y. Solomon and Ma'am Helenne Pregua. There is one sister from Indonesia, she is from East Nusa Tenggara, called by Sr. Erlin. She is the one who contacted me via Whatsapp Messenger. I am so happy to meet Indonesian sister. And there are 3 students who fetched us at the airport. They are the staff of the Education Program Organization of UIC. They are Jude, Jasmin, and Jason (later we called 'em as 3J -three J). The last one is the Driver who called as Kuya Sam (ps; Kuya means big-brother). From the airport, before we straightly went to our dormitory, they invited us to go to the schools. First we went to the UIC at Bajada. The places is the school starts from the Kindergarten until the Senior High School. The biggest campus of UIC. And we amazed, because the building is all pink. It is cute somehow, but the pink color there is satisfying us so much. And after that they also treat us at one of the restaurant. It is called Penong's. And they took us to the halal restaurant (since we are a moslem so we have to eat something halal). The grilled chicken it's really good, and I loved it hahaha. But there is no chili sauce there. Quite sad, but I think that I have to adapt in the new places. Indonesian are really can't live without chili lol. And after that we straightly went to the main campus of UIC (our dormitory) at Bankerohan. And we met another friends from Indonesia. They are Aliana and Hendri. And our group is completed lol. This is the picture of the 5 of us. First Week In January, 22nd 2018, UIC was held the Welcome Ceremony for Us. UIC is University of the Immaculate Conception. The university is ruined by Sisters. Once when we go there, there are some event called "Bible Month". And there is some stand whose decorated by the students. Something that makes me happy is there are the moslem stand and it's decorated by the moslem students. They are so nice to us, and also they are wear the hijab. I feel like home there. In the first week of our staying, we have to do the observation. So I met my Cooperating Teacher, called Sir Randy Loja. He is the physics student of the 9th grade, and I am teaching 4 class of the 9th grade in UIC. Sir Randy Loja is so nice to me. He is understood me so much, and just like my father lol. And a whole week I did my observation with him. I saw him how he is managed his class, how is the method that he used for teaching the 9th grade students. This is some photos of me with them. In the first week or we called it as observation week, the students are having so many events. Because of the whole week is the Catholic's Teacher Day (Ssam Day). So they are having fun with it. There is one day that the teachers didn't have to teach in front of the class. And the students are being in charge of it. And the students will teach their friends. It's a good thing that I've learned in Philippines. In the end of the Ssam Day, the students and the teachers are having fun together in Auditorium. And they are performing. I can see the dance and live singing. I am having so much fun time in the first week. The good things is we have a chance to go to the mall in Davao City. So in Wednesday, we went to Victoria Plaza (the first mall they said) with Ate Lorna (our guide) and buy something. We also have a chance to go to the another campus of UIC that we never been there. So on Friday we went to UIC Campus at Bonifasio (it is called by Annex Campus). The campus is for college students, and I can see the life of college students there. So happy to go to there, because there are lot of delicious food. We also happy because Ma'am Pregua is treat us some dessert, called as Maize con Hielo. It made by cereal, milk, corn, and an ice. An the tastes is really good. And we loved it very much. In the end of the first week, we are being invited by Indonesian Sisters in UIC to have some fun with 'em. In the morning we went to Annex Campus to stay at Sister's Cloister there, and we cooked Indonesian dishes with Sisters. We also eat together, singing a song together. Feels like home because we met Indonesian in the another country. After we finished our lunch, straightly we went to SM Lanang Mall. Maybe this is the second time to go to the mall. We having our quality time as Indonesian. Before we go back to our dormitory, we went to the another mall, it is called by Abreeza Mall. Another good mall of Davao City. And we also took some photos there. This is the preview of our photos together on Sunday. In the first week, we also have our tasks. To prepared for our teaching week in the second and third week, we have to understand our lesson and we have to make learning plan for our teaching. So I've to learned more about "Projectile Motion" and I have to made a learning plans. One learning plan is for one day. So I have to make about 5 or 6 learning plan. Because the minimum hours of our teaching is 20 hours. So while we observed, we also do our task and having fun with our friends in Philippines.
