Teaching SystemThe UIC High School Department, recognized as a Secondary School of Excellence, continues to meet the challenge to maintain and strengthen its academic and non-academic performance and sustain its achievements over the years. To ensure this, LEADS and SHAPES, an innovative and transformative system of instructional delivery has been introduced, cascading the school’s vision and mission and integrating Ignacian core and related values in all instructional classes and integration activities. LEADS is Learn, Excel, Achieve, Develop Character and Serve. SHAPES refers to key value points: Start where you are, Harness what you have, Acquire new knowledge and skills, Preserve your Filipino values and resources, Enrich your culture, Share your learning to others. Students and faculty are reminded constantly of these imperatives through a LEADS prayer before the start of a class or activity and the SHAPES Prayer at the end of a class or activity. These prayers also help them imbibe more meaningfully the Vision, Mission, and Goal of the University. Under this program, UIC High School aims to be the premier pre-college education provider in Region XI under the K to 12 program, forming graduates to be Leaders with Character. Towards this, the High School Department is focused on faculty development with emphasis on the teacher as curriculum leader, as keenly as it is on its student activity and development program. CurriculumUIC High School teachers have also prepared for the intensified application of the UbD Framework and the initial implementation of the K to 12 program by undergoing the training, “Curricular Visioning and Benchmarking” that puts emphasis on the teacher as a curriculum leader. The training’s lecture-workshop construct enhances teaching effectives. The training initiative is an innovative approach to re-tool the faculty to effect curricular change and to expand learning opportunities. The teachers productively engage in the workshop activities, leading to a review of the Development Program on Instruction. K-12 is a program that covers kindergarten and 12 years of basic education to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship. Its general features include:
Teaching MethodsThe teaching methods that been used for the students is they gave the preliminaries. It is the introduction before you started the lesson. Teachers will be have their own goal for one lesson. They can used Pictures or Videos as a media. And then they usually to give the APK for the students, so we would know how far the students are understanding the lesson. Teachers are also give the students assessment and purposive assignment as a media after they explain the concept of the lesson to the students. Learning materials & innovation, and Sources of learning technologyAs a science teacher, I used 3 books for the references of one lesson. And used the media to create the good atmosphere when I'm teaching. Science teacher also has a practicum in laboratories based on the lesson that they will be given. The good things is UIC was provided the needs of the teachers, through the books, media, laboratories, etc. They used book or laptop as a media for teaching. And the school was provided LCD and LCD television in all classroom. Observation on TeacherOn my observation week. I followed my Cooperating Teacher when he went to the classroom. I observed how is he doing with his teaching method. He already planned for teaching through the learning plan that he already made for it. And it was being checked by the Subject Specialist of the Major. He do prepared the materials for teaching, through the media, he used power point presentation for his teaching method. For teaching in class, he used the 3 steps of teaching. First is explaining the concept, second is explaining the example problem, the last is giving the study case that related to the lesson. Teaching PracticeAfter I already did the observation week. This is the time for me to have my teaching practice. The procedures of teaching are followed by this one:
I found some problem in my teaching practice. One of them is our language. Because Indonesian and Philippines have the different pronunciation when we speak English. So I have to adapt my self with their pronunciation. And sometimes some students were talked to me with Tagalog or Bisaya (one of the dialect in Philippines). And for the solving the problems, I just asked their friend what is he/she saying. Except the time management, classroom management here is also important. Me as a teacher have to make the classroom atmosphere conducive. My cooperating teacher said that my classroom management can still be improved. One thing that I have to do is develop my voice, so I can make the classroom atmosphere conducive than before I managed the classroom. Summary and SuggestionsFor all I have done in my teaching experiences. I could take some conclusion.
The purposes of practicum is to get a new experiences being a teacher. I already got many experiences from this project. The outcomes of practicum are I got a new insight of how's being a teacher, the difference of the curriculum and learning materials that been used from Indonesia and Philippines, and also the school system and managment. The challenge of practicum is the language. English is really important in the world, so we have to improved our english skill. And through this project I could improved my skill. Not my hard skills but also the soft skills. Suggestion for future improvement. I would like to giving some suggestion for UIC, I hope that in the next batch, the schedule for the pre-service student teacher will be given in the first day of our stay. The day by day schedules for the PSST, I think is good. Overall impression. I am so thankful to joined this program. Because I could see the teachers world. And I already knew that being a teacher is hard but it is nice occupation ever. And I also knew that the experiences was the best teacher. This program was the best program for me as a college students. I would like to say thank you to my home university, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) Surabaya for gave me the opportunity and of course my host university, University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC) Philippines for welcoming us and gave us the nice hospitality ever. And the last is for Southeast Asia Ministry of Education Organization (SEAMEO) for making the best exchange program ever.
